The Dish Pit (Ballad of the Dishwasher)

from The Dish Pit by Matt Logie

/

about

Based on the daily struggles of a dishwasher that I work with

lyrics

Washing dishes all day long
Doing heavy lifting, his arms are getting strong
Trays, spoons, forks, and knives
You can see the boredom in his eyes

Stacks of plates and piles of silverware
The servers want them done but he don't care
He thinks, "I don't care if they abhor me,
I'll get to it soon it's not my priority"

Finally the cutlery's done
He rings the bell but they won't come
He does his best to help them out,
but when they won't return the favor it makes him want to shout

Filling sinks with chemicals and hot water
The pay ain't great, why even bother
Doin' the same thing every day
There's gotta be something here that makes him stay

Sprayer in hand he gets to his task
Day in, day out... bustin' his ass
One by one he puts the dishes on the rack
The dishwasher... breakin' his back
